Alla års bibliotek

EN stark anledning till mitt yrkesval tror jag är Höganäs stadsbibliotek. Sen förde ödet mig vidare till forskningsbiblioteksvärlden - och där hamnade jag på ett toppenställe. Men bland folkbibliotek tycker jag fortfarande att Höganäs är outstanding och det är jag tydligen inte ensam om att tycka. Urvalet och tillgången till av böcker och filmer, personalens kunskap och inte minst Eriks Axplock - jag säger som den som kommenterat i HD - Go Erik! Snart kommer jag på besök, tjoho!

Hitlers bibliotek

Times online berättar om att Adolf Hitlers privata bibliotek, som har förvarats på Library of Congress sedan kriget nu för första gången har blivit ordentligt genomgånget. Det visar sig att Adolf bl. a. var förtjust i Don Quijote, Robinson Crusoe och Onkel Toms stuga samt att han ansåg att Shakespeare var en större författare än Goethe och Schiller. Han hade för vana att organisera om sin boksamling med jämna mellanrum och att klottra kommentarer i marginalen. 

Jobba ute i biblioteket en dag!

Hos Swiss Army Librarian läser jag om den fantastiskt strålande idén Work Lika A Patron Day. Brian Herzog föreslog att den 15 oktober skulle vara en WLAP-dag då man istället för att sitta på sin kammare förflyttar sin arbetsplats ut i biblioteket:

• enter and leave the library through the public entrance (not the staff doors)
• use the public restrooms
• use the public computers to do your work
• reserve public meeting rooms for meetings
• follow all library policies

Walking Paper lägger till några fler saker:

• sit in the chairs/use the furniture meant for the public
• use only the patron interface for searching your catalog
• pay your library fines (no waiving them the day before!)
• use a database you’ve never used before

Givetvis har det även skapats en Flickrgrupp för WLAP.
Brian föreslår att det ska vara en årligt förekommande aktivitet som tydligen ska inträffa sex veckor efter något som i USA kallas Library Appreciation Month.

Hänger på Flickr för att hitta inspiration och goda exempel på bibliotek som använder Flickr på olika sätt, för att kommunicera, marknadsföra eller helt enkelt för att skapa transparens och delaktighet.
Helt plötsligt kom jag in på ett sidospår och hittade rolig grupp:

Men för att återgå till syftet till mitt Flickrbesök, använder ni er av Flickr på era bibliotek? Har ni tips på bibliotek som gör det? Funderar ni på att göra det? Och hur gör ni det? Kollar någon, förutom er själva, på bilderna?

No brief candle

CLIR - Council of Library and Information Resources publicerade i augusti en rapport där 25 "ledande" bibliotekarier, forskare, IT-specialister och publicister diskuterar frågan "How should we be rethinking the research library in a swiftly changing information landscape?" En viktig fråga för oss alla i branschen såklart och vid en hastig genombläddring verkar här finnas kloka tankar, värda att fundera vidare över.

De 25 mest moderna biblioteken

Best Colleges Online listar de 25 mest moderna biblioteken i världen. I kategorin arkitektur finns två svenska bibliotek med! Nämligen Halmstad- och Malmö stadsbibliotek. Motiveringarna lyder:

Malmö stadsbibliotek

This bright, glass enclosed Swedish library was designed by Henning Larsen. It employs design that is both functional and attractive while embracing many modern features that help the library run more smoothly and efficiently as well. The new FKI Logistex self-service check-in kiosks allow books to be checked in without the assistance of library staff, visitors use internet and other computer services, and plans have been made to link library data nationwide to make finding and using materials easier and more efficient. Perhaps most notably, the library offers the ability to check out a person for a 45-minute chat in an attempt to promote understanding and break down stereotypes.

Halmstad stadsbibliotek

 For a library that blurs the line between the indoors and outdoors, check out this Swedish design. Built to extend over the nearby Nissan River, the building is bright and airy, allowing in plenty of light. An atrium at the center of the building surrounds an existing chestnut tree, bringing a bit of the outdoors into the library’s interior spaces and creating an innovative and soothing library experience.

Open Shelves Classification

Thingology (LibraryThing´s ideas blog) ska skapa ett nytt klassificeringssystem!

The vision. The Open Shelves Classification should be:

• Free. Free both to use and to change, with all schedules and assignments in the public domain and easily accessible in bulk format. Nothing other than common consent will keep the project at LibraryThing. Indeed, success may well entail it leaving the site entirely.
• Modern. The OSC should map to current mental models--knowing these will eventually change, but learning from the ways other systems have and haven't grown, and hoping to remain useful for some decades, at least.
• Humble. No system--and least of all a one-dimensional shelf order--can get at "reality." The goal should be to create a something limited and humble--a "pretty good" system, a "mostly obvious" system, even a "better than the rest" system--that allows library patrons to browse a collection physically and with enjoyment.
• Collaboratively written. The OSC itself should be written socially--slowly, with great care and testing--but socially. (I imagine doing this on the LibraryThing Wiki.)
• Collaboriately assigned. As each level of OSC is proposed and ratified, members will be invited to catalog LibraryThing's books according to it. (I imagine using LibraryThing's fielded bibliographic wiki, Common Knowledge.)

Jag kan inte släppa det här med att kunna söka efter böckernas färg! I New Englands School of Laws bibliotekskatalog Portia finns givetvis den möjligheten. Vem ska bli först med denna möjlighet i Svergie?!

 

Wish you were here

State Library of Victoria har anordnat en fototävling på temat "Victorians on vacation". Deltagarna fick ladda upp sina bilder och dessutom tagga dem med valfria ämnesord. Man hade två klasser - vuxna och barn - och vinnaren i varje klass fick en digitalkamera. Kul idé, kanske något vi på vårt bibliotek skulle kunna göra inför KI:s 200-årsjubileum 2010 kanske? "Din bild av KI". Helst gamla bilder då tycker jag, de är ofta roligast - typ den här!
